We need to talk more about transfusion-transmitted malaria in Plasmodium vivax endemic areas☆

چکیده
alaria is the most widespread and relevant parasitic disease orldwide; it is primarily transmitted by bites of Anopheles sp., ut can also be transmitted congenitally or through infected lood transfusions. The major species infecting humans are lasmodium falciparum and P. vivax. Even considering that both pecies lead to severe disease, the first has been traditionally ssociated to more deaths, mostly in the African continent. o vaccine is available so far and the major control tools are ased on early diagnosis and treatment, and vector control. In Brazil, after the eradication campaign started in the 950s, malaria became restricted to the Amazon Region, which espite representing 50% of the national territory holds no ore than 10% of the population. After the 1990s, due to better ontrol of P. falciparum, P. vivax became the main species, and is esponsible for almost 85% of the reported cases, paralleling he decrease in the overall fatality rate, the most successful oal of the Brazilian Malaria Control Program.1 However, this arasite is able to develop dormant stages (hypnozoites) in

Intravenous artesunate for transfusion-transmitted plasmodium vivax malaria in a preterm neonate.
Transfusion-transmitted malaria (TTM) in neonates is rare. TTM can occur in both endemic and nonendemic areas because the current tests used to screen the donor blood for malaria are unreliable when there is low parasitemia. Malaria must be considered as an important differential diagnosis for neonatal sepsis after exchange transfusion. Management strategy in TTM in the neonatal period is not s...

Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium knowlesi are the parasites that infect humans. Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax cause most of the malarial infections worldwide. Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium knowlesi are susceptible to chloroquine. Chloroquine was the world's most widely used antim...
متن کاملThe Epidemiology of Imported Malaria and Transfusion Policy in 5 Nonendemic Countries.
Addressing risk of imported malaria is complicated by 5 human species of Plasmodium, semi-immunity in donors with long-term exposure, increasing travel and immigration, changing risk in endemic areas, and limitations of screening assays. To gain insight into policy formulation, we have compiled epidemiologic data from 5 countries with different policies involving either deferral (the United Sta...
متن کاملTransfusion-transmitted malaria: case report of asymptomatic donor harboring Plasmodium malariae.
Malaria in Brazil is endemic in the Amazon region, but autochthonous cases with low parasitaemia occur in the Atlantic Forest area of the country. According to Brazilian legislation no test is mandatory for blood donors from non-endemic areas. However if they have traveled to malaria transmission regions they are deferred for six months before they can donate. This report describes a transfusio...

Introduction: Malaria is one of the most important parasitic diseases in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world and kills a large number of People annually. Diagnosis of the disease is preformed by microscopic and molecular methods. This study has been designed for detecting of latent/sub-patent infection caused by plasmodium vivax in individuals with history of vivax malaria without an...
